Types of Laser Eye Surgeries

LASIK, Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, is one of the most promising laser eye surgery for eliminating refractive errors. LASIK offers many benefits, such as minimal incision, precisional surgery, minimal recovery time, and high success rates. More than 90% of LASIK patients obtain 20/20 vision the next day. The surgery also reshapes the cornea and treats myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia eye diseases.

With the increasing popularity of LASIK surgery and its success rates, there are many advances in LASIK surgeries. Hence here are descriptions of different types of laser eye surgery.

  • Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA)

This Laser technique, ASA, corrects vision by reshaping the cornea. SBK Advanced LASIK and ASA seem similar, but the key difference is in creating the corneal flap with laser. This laser eye surgery is useful for treating corneal thickness, corneal scarring from contact lenses, corneal scarring due to previous eye surgeries, and specific occupational or recreational needs.

  • SMILE Vision Correction

SMILE stands for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction. It is a minimally invasive procedure specially designed to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism. Using the femtosecond laser, a small corneal lenticule is created and extracted through an opening made in the cornea. Finally, the cornea is reshaped to achieve the desired refractive correction.

Although, 90% of patients are recommended LASIK for refractive index correction. But there are also some candidates who are denied LASIK or are not fit for the procedure. In such a case, Phakic IOLs are recommended for refractive index correction.

  • Refractive Lens Exchange

RLE is indicated to replace the dysfunctional natural eye lens causing progressive loss of near vision,  presbyopia, or cataract. In this procedure, the surgeon replaces the natural eye lens with a premium intraocular lens that is capable of focusing at near, intermediate, and far distances. RLE eliminates the need for glasses, bifocals, or readers and eliminates cataracts.

  • Refractive Cataract Surgery

The lens becomes hard, yellow, and cloudy due to cataracts, and the vision deteriorates. LASIK surgery replaces natural eye lenses with artificial IOL lenses and restores vision. The surgery reduces the patient’s dependency on glasses and bifocals and treats nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia.

                                             What are Phakic IOLs?

Phakic Intraocular Lenses are designed for people with nearsightedness who aren’t candidates for LASIK surgery. Those having very thin cornea are also recommended phakic IOLS. During the Phakic IOL procedure, the microscopic lenses are implanted between the iris and the natural lens. The lens focuses light onto the retina and creates clearer distance vision,  reducing or eliminating your dependency on thick glasses or contacts.
