Here’s What You Need To Know About Cornea Transplants

Corneal diseases are a major cause of vision loss. According to data, in India, there are 10.6 million people affected by unilateral corneal blindness. Malnutrition or deficiency of vitamin A is one of the biggest causes of corneal blindness, which may require corneal transplants.

The cornea is a transparent outermost layer of the eye that protects other parts from dust, particulate matter, and UV rays, which can harm the eyes. The cornea accounts for 2/3rd of the vision, so damage to the cornea threatens our vision. Typically if your eyes feel gritty or turn red persistently, you should seek immediate help from an eye hospital. Cornea transplant today has a high success rate of 90-95 percent when performed by an experienced cornea specialist in Mumbai.

Symptoms Showing You Need A Cornea Transplant

Your doctor will do a perfect analysis of your eyes and will suggest tests to determine whether you’ll need a transplant. Some of the common symptoms include:

  • Pain in the eyes
  • Constant redness for a prolonged period
  • Cloudy vision
  • Complete vision loss

How To Prepare For Cornea Surgery?

Before the surgery, you must self prepare yourself mentally. Your pre-surgical preparation will include:

  • A full eye examination
  • Taking accurate measurements of the eye
  • A comprehensive review of the medical history of eye or medication you are taking presently

Cornea Transplant Procedure

The cornea transplant is done using a donor cornea. A part of the damaged cornea is removed and is replaced with the donor cornea. There are two types of cornea transplant, namely-

  • Penetrating Keratoplasty – It is a full-thickness cornea transplant where the entire diseased cornea is taken out using a special instrument, and the donor cornea is placed and stitched.
  • Endothelial Keratoplasty– In this procedure, only diseased tissues from the back corneal layers are removed partially.
  • Lamellar keratolasty: In this procedure only diseased front layers of cornea are replaced.

Results

In most cases, patients have experienced positive results in restoring full or at least partial vision. After the surgery, your eyes may not duly accept other cornea tissues, but eventually, it will settle down and adjust. You will be required to follow the doctors’ instructions and prescriptions thoroughly.

Eye / Cornea Donation

There is a shortage of cornea transplants in India as people are not aware of the cornea donation process. An eye donation means cornea donation, which is recovered from the deceased who had pledged to donate eye after death. The cornea can also be donated with the consent of the family members of the dead. It takes not more than 30 minutes for the process. You can pledge to donate eyes and give someone the light of life.
